Internships

Spring 2012

Minnesota Children’s Museum offers a variety of unique internships that are an opportunity for you to gain practical experience and develop workplace skills. Internships at the Museum are part-time (about 10 hours per week for 10-12 weeks). Applicants typically have completed at least one year of college and must be at least 18 years old.

 

Spring Internship applicants are due Friday, February 3. Internships start at the beginning of March and run through May. The following positions are available this spring:

Security: Assist the security department with day-to-day security procedures to ensure the safety of Museum visitors and employees. Test new procedures for security and customer service.

Corporate and Foundation Grants: Assist the Development staff in submitting corporate and foundation grants. Work will include research, maintaining files, grant-writing, and learning about the local funding community.

Fundraising Events: Assist in the planning and execution of the 2012 Grand Family Ball. Duties include preparing mailings, assisting with the raffle and silent auction, and working at the Ball itself.

Development Donor Data: Opportunity to work in the world of non-profit fundraising. Duties include preparing mailings donors, data entry, prospect research, and maintaining files. The intern will also have the chance to work on an appeal to a small audience.

Development: Research grant, individual donor and corporate foundation prospects. Use the Raiser's Edge database to maintain current information about donor prospects, correspond with donors and assist Development events.

Costume Design and Props: Assist staff in creating, maintaining, and installing the many costumes and props used by children in the various Museum exhibits.

Exhibit Maintenance: About 400,000 visit our Museum each year and we need your help to maintain and repair our exhibits! Interns also help install new exhibits. Depending on skill and experience level, interns may build components for new exhibits.

Education Programs-Museum Classes: Help lead classes for students who visit the Museum on field trips. Meet and greet arriving students, engage with class participants to enhance their learning and enjoyment and prepare supplies for classes.

Environmental Education Programs-Live Animals: Facilitate live and non-live animal education programs for Museum visitors. The intern will use the Museum's collection of live animals to spark visitors' interest in the natural world. In addition to programming, the intern will assist in care of the Museum's live animals.

Educational Programs- Activity Facilitator (120 hours): This intern is responsible for facilitating a variety of regularly scheduled educational programs and activities for Museum visitors. Programs include classroom art activities, sensory programs and interactive gallery activities.

Public Programs Coordination: Assist with scheduling, taking inventory, and ordering of supplies. Collect and calculate program data, assist with program-related communications, coordinate logistics for special programs and activities and special projects to improve department processes.

Museum Operations: Gain experience with the daily tasks that are essential to running a large customer service department in a non-profit organization. This may include running reports, assisting with scheduling, updating spreadsheets and documents and other administrative tasks. This position is also part of the leadership team, which includes participating in department leadership meetings and coordinating projects and information for the floor staff.

Marketing: Assist with various projects in the Museum's External Relations department including data management and analysis, sales promotions and media relations.

Recruiter: Post volunteer and intern positions online, conduct phone and in-person interviews and make hiring decisions for some internship positions.

Youth Development: Coach youth volunteers in their roles with young children and facilitate activities designed to help youth volunteers gain skills through their volunteer experiences. Weekend hours required.

Membership and Events: Design, complete and implement surveys of the Museum’s membership. Assist with event planning and implementation. The Membership and Events intern will also assist with all aspects of membership program administration including research, processing membership payments, database administration and membership sales and service.

Public Relations: Assist with press releases, photo projects and write and copyedit newsletters.

Human Resources: Gain a variety of experience with Human Resources projects like Affirmative Action reporting and complete steps in the hiring process for job openings.
