Kids can get their circuits flowing during Inventor’s Workshop Day at Minnesota Children’s Museum on Saturday, Feb. 17, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Scientists and engineers from Seagate Technology® will demonstrate the amazing world of scientific discovery through magnetism, electricity and a variety of hands-on activities during a fun-filled day devoted to sparking creativity and inquiry.
Children and adults can take apart and see what’s inside a hard disk drive, X-Box or PlayStation 3; create sticky art and their own inventions; get an up close look at everyday (and not so everyday) items under a microscope; and try dancing on a super sticky dance floor during the “Sticky Shuffle.”
Special Activities
Seagate® Activity Tables 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
- What’s Inside?: Take apart an X-Box, PS3 or hard drive, discover parts smaller than a speck of pepper and get a new look at familiar things under the microscope.
- Amazing Magnetism: Build an electromagnet, play a game of magnetic hide and seek and draw on magnetic paper.
- Illuminating Electricity: Experiment with the Van de Graaf generator for a hair-raising experience, try the electro-static meter and lightening ball, and build a mini-electric motor.
Inventor’s Workshop 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
- Drop in for ingenious fun! Use your imagination and a variety of materials to create your own invention.
Story Time 10:30 a.m.
- Listen to tales of innovation during Story Time.
Big Fun! 11:30 a.m.
- Join in the fun and do the “Sticky Shuffle” on super sticky mats and try on a clean room “bunny” suit.
The daylong Inventor’s Workshop program is an extension of the regular weekend program sponsored by Seagate, at which children create imaginative, three-dimensional structures using a wide variety of materials, including many disposable items which families have in their own homes, like boxes, egg cartons, and plastic containers.
“The program encourages creative problem solving and experimentation as children and adults work together to construct new inventions using everyday materials in new or different ways,” explains Joan Gunderson-Palmer, Daily Programs Coordinator at the Museum.
