Frequently Asked Questions

How often can I visit?
Membership to Minnesota Children's Museum includes 12 months of unlimited admission.

Does my year of membership start when I join, or is it a calendar year?
Membership is valid for one year from the time you join or renew.

When is the Museum least busy?
Minnesota Children's Museum is a popular destination for families and groups of all ages. If you would like to plan your Museum visit around how many other visitors you might find when you arrive, following are some pointers that can help. Keep in mind that these are only guidelines; we cannot always predict attendance.

Some typically low–traffic times:
Habitot Tuesdays
1st, 3rd & 5th Tuesday of each month
9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
No school groups scheduled
Presented by St. Paul Travelers

• Early Bird Gallery
Weekdays (unless a gallery is closed for exhibit change or maintenance)
9 – 10 a.m.
One gallery is open only to families—no field trip groups

• Friday evenings and Sunday mornings (except for Free 3rd Sundays)

• Daily after 3 p.m.

Some days are predictably busier than others:
• Rainy or snowy days

• Days when schools are closed

• April, May and early June are busy months for school groups (most field trip groups visit in the morning, so afternoons during these months are quiet)

• Target Free 3rd Sundays
3rd Sunday of each month
9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Free admission for all visitors

A note about school group visitors:
School group visits are an important part of the Museum’s mission, “sparking children’s learning through play.” The Museum reaches out to many children who might not otherwise have the opportunity or funds to visit. Many of the groups visit at a reduced rate offered to schools and organizations that serve economically disadvantaged children and families. In addition, the revenue from groups who do pay the full group admission rate is one way that we are able to keep the costs of our admission and memberships affordable. Children love their school visits to Minnesota Children’s Museum. If your children are preschool age, they will soon be among the groups of children playing, learning and creating lifelong memories on their school field trip at the Museum.

What are my options for lunch and snacks?
Kid Spark™, Minnesota Children’s Museum Store, has healthy food and beverage options for children and adults. There is also a small vending area with tables and chairs. Visitors are welcome to bring a bag lunch; however, food and drinks are not allowed in the galleries and seating is limited. The Great Big Room is open from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Habitot Tuesdays for families to use for lunch, snack or a break. Children and adults can enjoy a variety of sit–down and fast food restaurants connected to the Museum by skyway or within a short walk.

A drawing of the Museum's Box Office. How long does it take to receive my membership cards?
If you join or renew at the Museum Box Office, you will be given temporary membership cards. Permanent cards should be received two to three weeks after you join or renew at the Box Office, by mail or phone.

How many membership cards will I receive?
You will receive two membership cards. If you have a nanny on your membership and would like additional cards, please call the membership hotline at 651–225–6004 or submit your request using the Update Your Information form.

I lost my membership cards. What should I do?
Call the membership hotline at 651–225–6004, request new cards using the Update Your Information form, e–mail membership@mcm.org, or talk to a Box Office staff member on your next Museum visit to request replacement cards. If you are visiting before you receive your replacement cards, present a photo I.D. at the Box Office and a staff member can look up your membership information.

Can I upgrade my membership in the middle of the year?
Passport memberships can be upgraded to the Passport Deluxe level at any time. The cost of the upgrade is prorated based on the number of months remaining in your membership.

Does the payment for membership qualify for a matching gift from my employer?
It may! Please contact your company's human resources or benefits department for their policy.

Can my friend and I purchase one membership for both of our families?
No. Passport and Passport Deluxe memberships cover two adults and all the children under age 18 living in one household. The only exception is for grandparents, whose memberships include all grandchildren even if they live in different households.

I am having a birthday party at Minnesota Children's Museum. Some of the children attending are members. Do I have to pay for them to attend?
A drawing visitors playing in Our World's restaurant.Membership does not apply to birthday party admission. Member families having birthday parties at the Museum receive a discount on the base price of the party.

My child is visiting the Museum with her school. Will our membership get her in free?
Free admission for members does not apply to field trips, birthday parties or special events.

When I purchase a gift membership, will the cards be mailed to the gift recipient or to me?
You can specify on the membership enrollment form where you'd like the membership cards and information to be sent. If you purchase a gift membership over the phone, please tell the membership representative where you'd like the membership cards and information to go.

Another adult will be bringing my children to the Museum. Can he or she use my family's membership?
If the other adult shows your membership cards, your children will be admitted free, but the adult will have to pay admission. If another adult will be bringing your children to the Museum frequently, you can add him or her to your membership as a “nanny” for $20.
