Set Your Students on the Path to Mathematics Success at the Preschool Math Institute

The Preschool Math Institute is a highly interactive, fun, in-depth, hands-on, and practical workshop where educators discover and learn about highlighting mathematics in their educational setting on a daily basis. Created specifically for preschool and kindergarten teachers, this two-day workshop provides the gifts of time, information, and each other to discuss the importance and place of math in a child’s life early on, and in a very simple and engaging way.

Laying the proper foundation for mathematical learning is key for children’s continued success with math later in the elementary school years. By recognizing everyday surroundings, materials and routines, The Preschool Math Institute focuses on being more intentional in preparing young children in mathematics. More specifically, participants of The Preschool Math Institute will:

• Define mathematics as it pertains to early childhood
• Recognize math opportunities that already happen throughout daily classroom experiences
• Better understand the child’s role of learning math at 3, 4, and 5 years of age
• Familiarize self more with the Early Childhood Indicators of Progress Early Learning Standards and the Minnesota Kindergarten Standards in mathematics
• Understand the educator’s role of approaching and guiding mathematics in an intentional way.
• Gain simple activity ideas that support mathematical growth
• Recognize the value of using math as an interdisciplinary subject
• Discuss successful observation and assessment tips for documenting children’s understanding of mathematics
• Generate ideas for involving families in their child’s mathematical learning
• Create, plan, share and prepare for incorporating mathematics into own setting
• Consider their own educational journey and professional development through their work with children
